
Arches are found in both the art and architecture of many different cultures feature prominently in the world of art both as elements within many different types of artwork as well as serving as the substrate for some of history’s most famous artists including Michelangelo, Raphael and Filippino. Arches as elements within a work of art emerged in the late 1300’s and played a central role in the meaning of the work. Arches served to focus the viewers attention and often the story the work was intended to convey was contained elaborate detail of the arch.
