Symbolism began as a literary movement in the 1880s.  It quickly gained a footing in the art world with artists such as Gustav Klimt, Edvard Munch, Frida Kahlo, Gustave Moreau and Odilon Redon who are considered to be the leading artists of the movement.  Art critic Hilton Kramer of the NY Times says there is no unifying identifiable consistency to identify the Symbolist art form. (Symbolism-In Search of a Style)  In spite of this pronouncement he goes on to say that Symbolism represents a rejection of modern society and seeks to look inward often seeking to represent the erotic or mystical aspects of the inner spirit.
