How our Original Textured, Three Dimensional Fine Art Prints Are Made
We all know that advances in digital technology have mushroomed over the past several decades. The first hard drive for microcomputers, as personal computers were then called, was introduced by Seagate in 1980 and held a whooping 5Mb of data. Today 1 terabyte hard drives are standard on most personal computers. Nowhere have these advances in digital technology been more visible than digital imaging. We carry digital photo and video recording devices in our pockets that are capable of capturing many thousands of pixels of digital image information and transmitting that data around the world in a fraction of second.
Another area of technological advance that is important to the story of the Soulevé print is 3 dimensional printing. As the ability to capture and manipulate digital representations of objects became more sophisticated, the machines that turn those troves of digital bits and bytes back into representations that humans can see, feel and touch haven’t been far behind. Today we are printing lifesaving medical devices, sophisticated machine parts, architectural models and many other objects on digital 3D printers.
The Soulevé fine art print emerged out of a marriage of these two technologies. Pioneered in cooperation with museums who wanted to use digital scanning technologies to conduct forensic analysis of some of their greatest works of art, and parlayed into instructions that can be sent to a digital printer, the Soulevé [pronounced sue-la-văh] fine art print is a textured recreation of an original work of art created by artistically laying down multiple layers of ink to mimic the physical characteristics of the artist’s brushstrokes. Soulevé prints can have textures as much as 1/4 inch in height. Artist’s themselves sometimes have difficulty telling the difference between their own original paintings and a Soulevé reproduction.
Our Soulevé prints typically contain textures up to 1/8th of an inch in height. More dramatic physical textures are available by special request. The Soulevé printing process can be performed on many different substrates. Our standard offerings are on 3/16ths of inch thick Dibond, a hard composite board with a special coating with exceptional bonding properties. DiBond is extremely durable and easy to frame. Soulevé prints are also available on stretched canvas.
